Baykeepers’ Kids Day Official Clean Sweep Tally

One of the most important events during the Kids Day was the Shoreline Sweep which gave the kids a chance to experience removal of plastic waste and other materials. Then just like one of the usual Shoreline Sweeps done by adults, our steering committee members take time to sort the collected materials and report the results to the Ocean Conservancy organization . It collects data from beach sweeps taking place around the world and uses the data to help lawmakers and others understand the negative impacts of plastics and trash pollution.

Here are some highlights of what the kids collected during their sweep:

Weight of trash picked up: 12 pounds

Plastic/foam pieces 231

Bottle caps (plastic) 25

Straws/stirrers (plastic) 27

Cigarette butts 10 (NOTE: The butts contain plastic)

Tobacco products (plastic cigar tips, wrap) 15

The removal of these materials by the kids is important and ideally they will continue to be Junior Baykeepers helping to collect and dispose of such materials whenever they use the beach.
