Baykeepers’ Kids Day July 3rd, 2026

As soon as the Community Clubhouse doors were opened last Friday afternoon, kids and their parents began to come inside. Soon 18 children were present and ready to experience a first of its kind event being offered by the Hanford Baykeepers Steering Committee: An event for kids ranging in age from 5 to 12 to expand their awareness of the forms of pollutants in the lake and what can be done about them.

Thanks to the leadership of an elementary school teacher related to a Baykeeper, the children were immersed in a combination of a few short videos, five hands-on exploration stations and a scavenger hunt on the beach. As the photos displayed below show, the kids were engaged and seemed to come away with a greater comprehension of the pollution problem and how they can contribute to its solution as Junior Baykeepers.

We want to thank the HBCC Board members for their helpful advice and the use of the Community Clubhouse. Without their support, this event would not have happened.

Finally, a friendly reminder that the Hanford Baykeepers Steering Committee members are dedicated to helping to educate fellow residents and local community members about how to reduce, reuse, recycle, repair and eliminate plastic waste (especially single-use plastic items) and other forms of materials impacting Lake Erie and the environment. If you are interested in joining us in this mission, click on the Get involved button that is found in the upper right-hand corner of this website or tell a member of the Hanford Bay Steering Committee (see the email about this news article for the list of their names).
